Policy on the use of AI tools
POLICY FOR THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TOOLS IN UNIANDES SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS
1. Ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence tools
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools should be oriented towards the improvement of the research processes that are developed, its use is under the supervision and responsibility of the authors. The use of AI as a tool can be useful at various points in the research, but the results it yields are not considered original content creation.
Authors are responsible for reviewing, verifying and correcting any results generated by AI, taking into account the possible biases that may arise from its use during the development of the research.
Authors must commit to use AI tools in a responsible manner, respecting intellectual property rights, data integrity and avoiding manipulation, misleading content or plagiarism that may affect the credibility of the work.
2. Transparency and declaration of the use of AI tools
In accordance with the needs of transparency and fairness, the use of AI cannot replace critical analysis or the research process, but as a complementary tool that promotes quality and clarity in manuscripts.
Authors who employ AI in any part of their manuscript development process should explicitly state its use. It is essential that authors clearly explain what AI tools they used, at what point in the research, and how it contributed to the research report.
This statement should be included in the methods section promoting transparency and strengthening ethics in scientific publication. Achieving transparency not only fosters trust in the research process, but also allows other researchers to replicate or evaluate the work more effectively.
3. Prohibition of AI authorship
In accordance with the ethical principles of scientific publishing, authorship is strictly human. AI cannot be listed as authors, co-authors, or as part of the bibliographic references of any article. Authorship implies responsibilities that technologies cannot assume.
Any use of AI is as another tool, but without granting authorship recognition, thus maintaining the integrity of the scientific process.
The use of authorship only by human authors helps to maintain academic integrity and to clearly define their responsibility. Authors are responsible for the accuracy, integrity and originality of their research work, including the use of AI.
4. Use of AI tools in images, graphs and figures
The use of generative AI for the creation or alteration of images is not permitted in scientific articles. However, in the case of research whose design or methodology uses AI tools for the creation of figures, graphs, or visual analyses, authors should describe their process in detail in the methods section.
It must be ensured that any images or figures included maintain authenticity and do not alter the results of the research.
5. On the use of AI tools in data generation
The generation of data for the development of research cannot be done through AI tools. Data collection and interpretation must be based on a rigorous application of techniques and instruments by the researchers, as detailed in the methods section.
6. Role of editors and the editorial review process
Editors should supervise and ensure that authors comply with these policies.
The importance of editors reviewing and updating statements on the use of AI tools is emphasized to avoid misunderstandings or bad practices that affect the scientific quality of scientific articles.
If there is any doubt or ambiguity about the use of AI tools in a manuscript, editors may request additional clarification prior to acceptance and publication of the article.
The originality and copyright statement of the journals should include reference to the policies on the use of AI tools for the knowledge of the authors.
Finally, the editors will supervise the development of this policy, which will be refined if necessary or if the conditions under which it was developed change.
